1. We assessed sex‐specific seasonal changes in major energy storage compounds (triglycerides, glycogen) in Gammarus fossarum and Gammarus pulex collected from the field, with respect to their reproductive activity. 2. The dynamics of stored energy followed a seasonal pattern in both species and sexes. Moreover, over a 4‐year period, these changes were independent of the year in which they were investigated. Stored energy reached a peak in late winter, but was depleted in late summer and early autumn, coinciding with the reproductive periods. 3. Triglyceride (annual mean ± SD) accounted for 79.7 ± 11.9% of the total stored energy and was responsible for the seasonal pattern. In contrast, glycogen contributed a lesser percentage (20.3 ± 11.9%). Over the study period, the amount of stored energy ranged between 0.39 and 4.08 kJ g?1 dry mass (triglyceride: 0.19–3.69 kJ g?1 dry mass; glycogen: 0.14–0.80 kJ g?1 dry mass). 4. In both species, the energy reserves of males were drastically depleted shortly before the cessation of precopulatory mate guarding in the field, thus offering a bioenergetic explanation for the reproductive period in these two widespread species.  相似文献

The author congratulates the Education Committee of the AmericanSociety of Biologists for undertaking the Science as a Way ofKnowing project. The project objective, to improve first-year,college-level biology courses, is excellent, and how to handlefood and man in the courses is an important issue needing attention. The author recognizes that course content should vary amonginstitutions because their programs serve widely divergentclientele.Suggestions are made concerning topics which the author believesgenerally should be given greater attention. Hunger and famine were recognized as being critical problemsin the world, and students should learn more about them. Scienceis humankind's great hope, and through it the problems the worldfaces are solvable. Instructors are encouraged to take a positiveapproach and demonstrate what science can do. Hunger and famine are largely the result of misguided nationaland international policies and not the result of our not knowinghow to meet the food needs of all the world's people. The challengeis as much to apply what we know as it is toincrease our stockof knowledge. This calls for greater emphasis on problem solving. Teachers are encouraged to view food in its broadest contextand call attention to the variations in the systems utilizedto produce and distribute it. Attention should be given to environmentalimpacts, efficiency, risk, and managerial requirements for thevarious systems. Global food needs in relation to the World's carrying capacityare discussed and information provided on the causes ofhungerand famine. Vital issues in food and hunger are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The success rate of reconstructing the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) with prosthetic ligaments is currently low both in humans and animals. The stress distribution in prosthetic ligaments that causes failure is very complex and not yet understood. Therefore, we have begun to develop a Finite Element Model of a prosthetic ACL. Here we describe the normal and contact stresses in DacronTM yarn (a multi-fibrillar structure) using input data based on experimental measurements of the load and strain of six designed yarns.

The results show that the normal and contact stresses in the fibres of the ACL yarn are directly proportional to the yam strains. Increasing the twisting length (transverse deformation) of the yarn increases the normal stress in the fibres and the yarn modulus, but decreases the contact stresses between the fibres. The structural properties of a yarn are dependent on the specific arrangement of various filament types. Increasing the distance between the longitudinal (symmetry) axes of the filaments and the axis of symmetry of the yarn decreases the stresses.  相似文献

The important fodder grass Poa alpina L. occurs at several ploidy levels with common aneuploidy. We isolated and characterized five polymorphic microsatellite markers for the study of molecular genetic variation of this species. As first examples of the value of the developed markers for population genetic analyses, we show that plants with more chromosomes have more microsatellite bands and that isolation by distance plays a small role in shaping microsatellite diversity of P. alpina in the Swiss Alps.  相似文献

The permeability of seed coats to solutes either of biological or anthropogenic origin plays a major role in germination, seedling growth and seed treatment by pesticides. An experimental set‐up was designed for investigating the mechanisms of seed coat permeation, which allows steady‐state experiments with isolated seed coats of Pisum sativum. Permeances were measured for a set of organic model compounds with different physicochemical properties and sizes. The results show that narrow aqueous pathways dominate the diffusion of solutes across pea seed coats, as indicated by a correlation of permeances with the molecular sizes of the compounds instead of their lipophilicity. Further indicators for an aqueous pathway are small size selectivity and a small effect of temperature on permeation. The application of an osmotic water potential gradient across isolated seed coats leads to an increase in solute transfer, indicating that the aqueous pathways form a water‐filled continuum across the seed coat allowing the bulk flow of water. Thus, the uptake of organic solutes across pea testae has two components: (1) by diffusion and (2) by bulk water inflow, which, however, is relevant only during imbibition.  相似文献

A density-based load estimation method was applied to determine femoral load patterns. Two-dimensional finite element models were constructed using single energy quantitative computed tomography (QCT) data from two femora. basic load cases included parabolic pressure joint loads and constant tractions on the greater trochanter. An optimization procedure adjusted magnitudes of the basic load cases, such that the applied mechanical stimulus approached the ideal stimulus throughout each model. Dominant estimated load directions were generally consistent with published experimental data for gait. Other estimated loads suggested that loads at extreme joint orientations may be important to maintenance of bone structure. Remodeling simulations with the estimated loads produced density distributions qualitatively similar to the QCT data sets. Average nodal density errors between QCT data and predictions were 0·24 g/cm3 and 0·28 g/cm3. The results indicate that density-based load estimation could improve understanding of loading patterns on bones.  相似文献
